April 2024 - Week 4 Roundup

Stripe-necked mongoose

Sighted on: 22.April.2024

It was a moment to cherish and celebrate for our guests. Natural history moments like these are what separates a great safari from a good safari. Our guests got to witness a Stripe-necked mongoose feeding on a deer carcass. However, once the mongoose became aware of our presence, it dragged the carcass over an almost ten-meter distance! It was a big surprise for me, as I had never realised that such a small animal could move such a large carcass.

Blue-bearded bee-eater

Sighted on: 23.April.2024

This one was for the birders among our guests. We spotted a blue-bearded bee-eater - one of the rarer bee-eaters of Kabini- on the bucket list of all birders. A large bee-eater which appears greenish overall with a bluish-green forehead, a long blue streak down the throat to the breast, and a dull yellow belly with green streaks. It has a dark, heavy bill and a long tail. Its flight is undulating, short, and rapid. Unlike other bee-eaters, it does not soar often nor appear graceful in flight. It can be inconspicuous as it sticks to the mid-canopy of the wooded groves and forests it inhabits. Calls include deep-throaty clucks, low growls, and dry croaks.
