December 2023 - Week 3 Roundup

Kill

Sighted on: 19.December.2023

wild dogs

Our guests got to witness a Wild Dog hunt today. We reached the scene at the exact moment when the dogs brought down a Spotted Deer and commenced feeding. Wild Dogs are very efficient hunters and clean eaters - they completely devour their prey, leaving little more than bare bones behind. While many may feel squeamish witnessing such a spectacle, this is the unforgiving game of life and death in the wild, where every death nourishes life.

Sighted on: 22.December.2023

Did you know that every woodpecker species follows a particular feeding behaviour to avoid competing with other species? This evening, our guests saw the largest woodpecker in Kabini - the White-bellied Woodpecker. White-bellied Woodpeckers feed from the lower strata of the tree to the upper strata. They pick, hammer, probe and pry off pieces of bark and wood before digging holes up to 20 cm long and 8 cm deep into the wood. Males of this species sport a bright red mohawk.
