Common tailorbird
Sighted on: 18.December.2025

The highlight of the week was the Common Tailorbird. Small yet captivating, this bird is best known for its remarkable nest-building skill. Using fine plant fibres or spider silk, it carefully “sews” leaves together to create a secure, cradle-like nest—one of the most distinctive constructions in the avian world. Measuring just 10–14 cm in length, the Common Tailorbird feeds primarily on insects and is easily recognised by its clear, melodious song. Found across India, Southeast Asia and parts of China, it is a strongly territorial species, admired as much for its ingenuity as for its presence in the landscape.
