Striated Heron
Sighted on: 12.February.2026

During the morning birding-by-boat experience on the Kabini backwaters, guests were treated to a rewarding sighting of a Striated Heron concealed within the emerald shadows of the riverbank. Often overlooked due to its compact size and remarkable camouflage, this species exemplifies patience and precision.
Perched low over the water on a tangle of roots, the heron’s blue-grey back and black cap blended seamlessly with the dappled light and dark reflections of the river. Its short yellow legs and stocky build distinguish it from the taller and more conspicuous Grey Heron, which is more commonly noticed along these stretches.
As the boat drifted silently with the current, the advantage of a low, unobtrusive approach became evident. The bird remained focused on its hunting, occasionally shifting position with deliberate, measured steps. At one point, it appeared to drop a small piece of debris onto the water’s surface—behaviour associated with its well-documented bait-fishing technique, used to lure fish within striking distance.
The sighting lasted several minutes, offering guests an intimate glimpse into the subtle drama of Kabini’s avian life—a reminder that the river holds far more than its celebrated elephants and crocodiles.
