February 2023 - Week 3 Roundup

Marsh Crocodile

Sighted on: 21.Feb.2023

We are inching closer to summer, and the water levels in the backwaters have started to recede—the receding water results in small islands being formed. These islands are the favoured resting spots of various species. During the boat safari, we spotted a giant Marsh Crocodile basking on one of these islands. Marsh Crocodiles are quite shy, and Kabini is one of the best places to see them. The moment the crocodile realized our presence, he got up and moved into the water.

Sloth Bear

Sighted on: 22.Feb.2023

It was an afternoon drive, and as it was summer, I decided to check as many waterholes as possible. Towards the end of the safari, we had the good fortune to sight a Sloth Bear about a hundred meters away. As soon as we spotted the animal, it started running away. I decided to double back and wait near the waterhole. About twenty minutes later, the Sloth Bear came to the water hole to quench its thirst.

A Tiger by Boat

Sighted on: 23.Feb.2023

We had one of the finest tiger sightings during the Boat Safari. A massive tiger came out of the bushes and walked all the way to the water's edge. After satisfying his thirst, he walked along the river bank, constantly marking his territory for about fifteen minutes. We had to wait patiently for almost twenty minutes for the tiger to appear, but our patience was amply rewarded.

Tiger Tank Female

Sighted on: 24.Feb.2023

This beautiful young tigress, whom we lovingly call the Tiger Tank Female, was recently spotted with two adorable tiny cubs and is trying to expand her territory. However, the absence of a famous tigress whose territory was adjacent to hers is working in her favour.
