June 2023 - Week 4 Roundup

Tiger

Sighted on: 20.June.2023

A young tigress, approximately four years of age, was seen lying in the bushes. A daughter of the well-known Backwater female, she was forced out of her natal territory by her mother and is now trying to establish a territory of her own in the Balle/Power line area. Due to this, she is now referred to as the Balle or Powerline female.

Leopard

Sighted on: 23.June.2023

As the Sun rises on the enchanted forests of Nagarahole, a dappled feline moves undetected through the dense undergrowth and positions itself on the side of the road. On the other side, a herd of Spotted deer graze with peace and harmony. I am on a safari vehicle full of curious onlookers; as we scan the forest from the ground to the canopy, we swoosh by the leopard, a relief his cover is not blown. Then something unexpected happens; as the vehicle returns on the same path, one of the guests shouts in joy, it's a leopard! Driver Mahesh stamps on his brakes, and the vehicle comes to a standstill; just five metres from us sits a male leopard; he sat there with his focus on the deer unflinching; it was not too late before he realized that with us here, his cover was blown, he had no chance for an easy meal and soon disappeared into the vastness of the forest. My once hungry and sleepy guests were now pumped up with adrenaline; what a wonderful sight! And all were in awe.
