Western Reef Egret
Sighted on: 28.November.2023
We were in for a surprise visit this week. A Western Reef Egret was sighted after a gap of eight years. Western Reef Egrets are found mainly in the coastal regions of tropical West Africa, the Red Sea, and the Persian Gulf and extend up to India. They are rarely found further inland, but some individuals occasionally make their way to Kabini.

Osprey
Sighted on: 30.November.2023
Our guests were lucky to spot an Osprey hunting a fish during the boat safari. An Osprey's vision is well adapted to detecting underwater objects from the air, and prey is first sighted when the Osprey is in flight about 10–40 m above the water. Once sighted, it hovers momentarily and then plunges feet first into the water, often completely submerging its entire body. As it dives, it adjusts the angle of its flight to account for the distortion of the fish's image caused by refraction. Ospreys typically eat on a nearby perch but have also been known to carry their prey longer distances. The Osprey in question gave us a perfect demonstration of its hunting abilities.
