Common kingfisher
Sighted on: 08.October.2025

During the morning boat safari, we chanced upon a Common Kingfisher. These tiny, brilliantly coloured birds have remarkably high energy needs—typically consuming about 50–60% of their body weight in food each day, or roughly 13 to 21 small fish. During the breeding season, their workload increases even more, as adults must catch additional fish to feed their chicks, each of which may eat 12–18 fish a day while in the nest. This high intake sustains their fast-paced hunting style and active lifestyle.

Marsh crocodile
Sighted on: 30.October.2025

During the evening boat safari, we spotted a Marsh Crocodile basking on a floating tree trunk. Although they typically prefer to bask on land, the high-water levels had submerged most of the exposed banks. The few remaining patches of dry ground were overrun by Lantana camara—an invasive species originally introduced as an ornamental shrub. With its usual basking sites claimed by water and lantana alike, the crocodile had adapted to rest upon this drifting perch, a quiet testament to nature’s resilience amid changing conditions.
