Huntsman Spider
Sighted on: 17.Sept.2024
During the Night Trail, our guests got to see a huntsman spider. They were fascinated to learn that huntsman spiders boast an impressive leg span, with some species reaching up to 12 inches (30 cm), making them among the largest spiders in the world. They are incredibly fast, capable of moving at speeds of up to 1.4 metres per second (3.1 mph), ranking them as some of the quickest spiders on the planet. Unlike web-building spiders, huntsman spiders actively hunt for their prey, using their speed and agility to capture insects.
These spiders have remarkable eyesight, with eight eyes that enable them to see in multiple directions, helping them detect movement and changes in light. They do not rely on webs; instead, they depend on their swift movements to catch food. Huntsman spiders also have a unique molting process, shedding their skin, legs, and pedipalps in one piece. When threatened, they can vibrate their bodies, release a foul-smelling liquid, or even detach a leg to distract predators. Their diet primarily consists of small to medium-sized insects, such as flies, bees, and butterflies. Despite their intimidating appearance, huntsman spiders are harmless to humans and typically do not bite unless provoked.
